Have you ever been in a W.W.II submarine?
Imagined what it must have been like to be depth- charged?
Considered riding a human torpedo with a ton of high explosive only inches away?
Pictured yourself cramped in a tiny miniature submarine about to slip under
an enemy ship?
Thought about escaping from a submarine trapped many hundreds of feet below
the surface of the sea?
Now you can experience the reality at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum
This unique Museum offers you the chance.... to climb aboard a real submarine, to discover true tales of heroism and to relive a life under the sea through the personal effects of the crews.
FROM PIRATE TO PEACEKEEPER
Trace the history of Submarine development from the age of Alexander the Great to the present day and the history of the British Submarine Service from the tiny Holland 1 to the nuclear powered Vanguard class - the Navy's present day peacekeepers. A film show depicting the history of the Submarine Service starts your submarine experience. Follow this with an evocative tour of HMS Alliance guided by an ex-submariner; see Holland 1 (the Royal Navy's first submarine) under conservation in her tank; examine at close quarters X24, a sister submarine to those which crippled the German battleship Tirpitz; picnic by LR3, a deep-submergence rescue submarine; touch the submarine torpedoes, guns, and missiles. In the Museum's historical and modern galleries, trace the history of the submarines and the men. Learn how nuclear fission drives today's submarines, and use our Geiger Counter. Sweep the panorama of Portsmouth Harbour through the periscopes of HMS Conqueror of Falklands War fame. Visit Remembrance Corner which commemorates those who devoted their lives to the Submarine Service, admire their medals, and read the stories of our 14 Victoria Cross heroes. Have a go at being a Submarine Captain in our Control Room trainer. Come face to face with Jim, an articulated diving suit, and trace the history of diving. Visit the Museum Gift Shop for a memento of your visit or a gift for a friend. A visit to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum is a fascinating day out, with something for the whole family. Only here will you discover the full history of the Submarine Service and it's heroes. Only here will you learn about the exciting technology which enables the crews to live, work and play under the sea for months at a time and fully appreciate the skill and courage of generations of submariners.
