HMS Storm

The Royal Navy S class submarine was numerically the biggest class ever built in Britain in its time. First ordered in 1929 they were still in production in 1944. They were equally suitable for either coastal operations in confined areas or ocean patrols. S class submarines were active in every theatre of war with great success. A total of 62 boats were built, of which 18 were sunk during the war.

HMS Storm was the first submarine in British history to be commanded by an officer of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve - Lieutenant Commander Edward P Young DSO DSC* RNVR.

HMS Storm took part in surface actions against enemy shipping in the East Indies for which Young earned a second Distinguished Service Cross. Young won his Distinguished Service Order for a series of eventful patrols. His medals are on display in the museum.
