Royal Mint Philatelic Medal Cover

WE COME UNSEEN is the evocative motto of the Royal Navy Submarine Service, which this year is celebrating its hundredth anniversary. To acknowledge the important role of the submarine, the sculptor John Mills was commissioned to produce an exceptional commemorative medal that will be incorporated in a special Philatelic Medallic Cover.

The bold representation of a submarine's conning-tower, emerging from the depths, features as the obverse design, while images of four vessels from the Holland 1, the first Royal Navy submarine, to the contemporary nuclear submarine, the Vanguard, appear on the reverse.

The stamps which accompany the medal pay tribute to the submarines and are franked with the date 24 May 2001 to signify the opening of the Holland 1 Building at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport.
